During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a different age” and an ambitious start to his administration.

A Historic Figure

The young figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Dynamics

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
