Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
